On January 12, 2026, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced new actions by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to streamline regulations, lower energy transportation costs, and maintain strong safety standards. The changes are expected to generate more than $600 million in annual savings while helping make energy more affordable for American families.
The updates modernize gas pipeline class location rules, reduce compliance costs for fuel transportation, and introduce a new enforcement policy tied to the national energy emergency. Together, the changes are expected to generate more than $600 million in annual savings while continuing to prioritize safety.
Both rules have been sent to the Federal Register and will take effect within 30–60 days of publication.
